What Is a Nexus Letter — and Why Does It Matter?
A nexus letter is a formal written medical opinion from a qualified healthcare provider that establishes the connection — the nexus — between a veteran's current medical condition and their military service. For the VA, this connection must be stated as "at least as likely as not" (50% or greater probability) caused or aggravated by service. Without a credible nexus letter, many legitimate claims are denied simply due to lack of medical opinion.
Your Claim Was Denied
A denial often means the VA lacked sufficient medical evidence linking your condition to your service. A well-written nexus letter from a licensed provider can be the deciding factor in a successful appeal.
You're Filing for the First Time
First-time filers with service-connected conditions benefit enormously from a nexus letter submitted with their initial claim. It establishes the medical bridge before the VA ever makes a decision.
You're Requesting a Rating Increase
If your condition has worsened or was underrated, a nexus letter documenting current severity and service connection can support a successful rating increase request.
Written by Kaelyn Lay, MSN, APRN-FNP-C — a licensed, board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with clinical expertise in medical record review and veteran-focused documentation.
Every Nexus Letter We Write Includes:

A nexus letter is only as strong as the clinician behind it. At VMEG, every letter is personally reviewed and authored by a licensed Nurse Practitioner — not a template, not a form.
